The two main types of home insurance cover are buildings insurance and home contents insurance.

What is buildings insurance?

This type of insurance covers the main structure of your home, not the contents, and is required to protect you against the cost of re-building your home in the event of fire, flood or similar disaster. If you have a mortgage, the lender will insist that you take out this type of policy.

Standard buildings cover will typically include loss and damage to the exterior of your home, including fences and outbuildings, and to any items inside your home, which are a fixed part of the structure – such as kitchen units. Amongst others, risks such as fire, flooding (excluding gates and fences), theft, subsidence and falling trees will be covered. Accidental damage is not usually included in a standard policy but can be secured as part of extended accidental damage cover. Damage caused by frost, wear and tear or faulty workmanship is not usually covered and you should also note that if you leave your home unoccupied for 60 days or more, the insurance will become invalid for some events - such as damage caused by leaking water or oil.

What is home contents insurance?

Home contents insurance protects your possessions against loss, damage and theft. In return for an annual or monthly premium, the insurance company will cover the cost of replacing or repairing an item that is lost, stolen or damaged.

You can choose cover according to your needs. A standard policy will typically include such cover as loss or damage to your possessions while in your home, alternative accommodation to the value of 15% of the value of the sum assured, replacement of locks and accidental damage of audio/video or computer equipment. However, you will have the flexibility to add cover for additional items or events such as freezer contents, pedal cycles and credit cards, or for accidental damage of further items.
